The Interactive Gambling Act 2001
The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 is the federal law that governs online gambling. It prohibits offering online casino games, online slots and online poker to people in Australia. Licensed online wagering on sports and racing, and licensed lotteries, are permitted. The Act targets operators: it is the provider offering a prohibited service who breaks the law.
How the rules are enforced
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) enforces the Act. ACMA regularly asks internet providers to block websites that offer prohibited gambling services, and it publishes the list of blocked sites. Advertising prohibited gambling services to people in Australia is also an offence.
Why licensing matters for players
An operator that offers online casino games to Australians has no Australian licence and sits outside Australian consumer protection.
